Funerals

Information

We offer our condolences to those who have recently suffered a bereavement.  We will be glad to help you organise a funeral or memorial service for your loved one.

These services mark the end of a person’s life on earth.  They provide an opportunity for the bereaved to mourn and reflect on their own mortality but also to celebrate and give thanks.  We will work carefully with you and others involved to create an apt rite of passage for your loved one.  We will also offer pastoral support to the bereaved.

Who can have a funeral or memorial service at St Laurence’s?

To have a funeral or memorial service at St Laurence’s Church the person must:

  • have lived in our parish or
  • have had a close pastoral connection with St Laurence’s Church or
  • have regularly attended services here

If you do not live in the parish and do not have a pastoral connection we suggest that you make contact with your local parish church,

You can find out which is your local parish church at A Church Near You

How do I arrange the service?

Your funeral director will help you with the practical details.  If you have not done so already the contact details of our local firms are given on this page.

Once your funeral director has contacted us to arrange a date for the funeral service you are organising, the priest who will be taking the service will be in touch with you. He or she will then discuss the content of the service with you in more detail.

When can we have a funeral or memorial service?

  • Monday 9.30am – 4pm
  • Tuesday 9.30am – 4pm
  • Wednesday 1.30pm – 4pm
  • Thursday 9.30am – 4pm
  • Friday 12.00 – 4pm
  • Saturday 1pm or 4pm

We will ensure that the church is quiet for 30 minutes prior to the funeral.

We are not expecting a lot of people and the church is very big.

There are several spaces available in St Laurence’s where you could have your service. The nave (main body) of the church seats 350 people, but if you are looking for a more intimate space why not consider the chancel (100 people), the Lady Chapel (65 people) or St John’s Chapel (40 people).
