Embroidery at St Laurence Church

19th century altar frontalWe have had a group of embroiderers for a number of years who are responsible for making and taking care of the kneelers and altar frontals. The last kneelers were embroidered for the chancel, and made to celebrate the millennium. We now have an ongoing embroidery project to make canvas-work kneelers for the altar rail in St John's chapel {Palmers' Guild Chapel}. The kneelers are to reflect the colours in the east window and the connection of the Palmers with the medieval legend of pilgrims setting off for Jerusalem. The design is based on palm leaves and shells, which are the emblems associated with the pilgrims.

We have just completed embroidering a curtain for the bellringers' door in the chapel. This is 90" (2.30m) high and depicts a palm tree resting on a bed of shells, in colours to blend with the golden window above the door.

During the St Laurence "At Home" weekend at the August Bank Holiday, several ladies from the sewing group displayed some completed kneelers and embroidering, whilst others showed work in progress.
